Polk Audio vs SVS Spec Showdown
Speaker type
The Polk Audio ES15 is a bookshelf speaker, offering you versatile placement options. You can use it as a side, rear, or elevation surround speaker. It also features screw inserts and keyhole slots for wall mounting. The SVS Ultra Evolution is a center channel speaker. Its design is specific to the center position in a home theater setup. This shape is optimized for dialogue clarity and on-axis performance. The Polk unit provides more flexibility for different room layouts, while the SVS unit is dedicated to a single, critical role in your system.
Configuration
The Polk Audio ES15 is sold as a pair. This means you receive two identical units for left and right channels or surround duties. The SVS Ultra Evolution is listed as each, indicating it is a single unit. You would need to purchase multiple units for stereo pairs, though center channels are typically used singly. For a complete stereo setup, the Polk package provides both channels at once. The SVS configuration requires you to buy separately for left and right positions if you intend to use them outside the center role.
Impedance
The Polk Audio ES15 features 4- and 8-Ohm compatibility. This dual impedance rating allows it to work well with a wide range of amplifiers and AV receivers. It can handle lower impedance loads without strain. The SVS Ultra Evolution does not list specific impedance values in the provided data. Without this information, you cannot verify if it matches your amplifier's output requirements as easily as the Polk unit. The explicit 4- and 8-Ohm support gives the Polk speaker a clear advantage in amplifier compatibility.
Woofer size
The Polk Audio ES15 includes a 5.25-inch woofer. This driver size contributes to its bass response and overall frequency coverage. The SVS Ultra Evolution does not list a specific woofer size in the provided specifications. It is a 3-way speaker, which implies multiple drivers, but the exact dimensions are not provided. You can compare the Polk's explicit 5.25-inch driver against the SVS's unspecified driver sizes. The Polk data offers more concrete information regarding the physical size of its low-frequency driver.
Enclosure type
The Polk Audio ES15 uses a ported enclosure. This design includes a Power Port Technology that aims to deliver louder bass with less turbulence and distortion. The SVS Ultra Evolution does not specify its enclosure type in the provided data. Ported designs are common for enhancing bass output in bookshelf speakers. Without knowing the SVS enclosure type, you cannot compare the bass tuning strategies directly. The Polk unit provides a clear description of its acoustic design, while the SVS details are missing in this regard.
